The DPA Microphones 4003 is one of the very few microphones that
everyone agrees is among the best in the world.
The 4003 is an omnidirectional, high-voltage (130 Volt) condenser
microphone with an extremely flat and wide frequency response; its bass
response is down only 2 dB at 10 Hz! Its unusually fine off-axis
frequency response preserves the ambience of the recording site,
resulting in unusually transparent recordings. Its high sensitivity and
low self-noise make it the ideal choice for both studio and live
recordings.
The 4003 is acoustically identical to the studio-standard 4006, but is
powered by 130 Volts instead of the 4006's more standard 48 Volts; this
increases its maximum sound pressure level by approximately 10 dB. The
4003 uses no transformers in its output stage. Its diaphragm is
1/2-inch in diameter. When used with the HMA4000, it provides a line
level output to a recorder or mixing board.
The 4003's transparent sound quality and impressive dynamic range,
together with its wide range of acoustic pressure equalizers and
protection grids, puts it at the very top of the very short list of the
world's finest microphones.
The 4003 is favored by Tom Jung at DMP and Millenia Media, among many
others.
