The "$1000 Challenge"
William Haven coordinated the "$1000 Challenge" for the Nature
Recordists group on Yahoo. Their goal was to find the best preamp and
recorder for nature recording with a cost of less than $1000. The
results of the test can be reviewed here:

To my ear, the [Core Sound] Mic2496 was every bit
as quiet as the Sound Devices 744t, Tascam HD-P2, and HHB MDP500, three
highly regarded recorders. The Mic 2496 performed better than the Sony
Hi-MD machine and Nagra ARES-M in this test.
My conclusion is that the Mic2496, in combination with an inexpensive
recorder with digital input like the M-Audio Microtrack 2496, makes an
excellent field recorder, worthy of use with the quietest microphones.
The Mic2496's small size and light weight are most welcome when carrying
gear in the field.
I also found the Mic2496 to have a remarkably rugged construction.
It's considerably stronger than I expected from the photos. I
appreciate the locking toggle switches.

Just wanted to let you know that we are greatly enjoying the
Microtrack. Even my wife has had absolutely no problems getting it to
work, which says a lot. I have a 2 gb card, everything transfers without
much waiting. I just loaded the newest firmware (1.2), the battery lasts
long enough. In short, it does everything I had hoped it would. I just
had a rehearsal for my opera and could listen to the rehearsal in the
train home, perfect.

It sounds amazing, way better than the minidisc recorder I have been
using, and the ease of transferring the files to a computer is going to
be revolutionary for my productivity, I can see. ...

Well boys and girls- I received my M-Audio unit yesterday in the mail
from Core Sound. Need this to replace my two aging Sony DAT's. I was at
work so I had my daughter charge the M-Audio up. Came home- grabbed the
unit and a 4 GB CFII card from my camera and ran off to choir
practice. This unit is amazing.
The size is as stated but what was really surprising was the weight [
as reported about the same as a pack of cigarettes] and the ease of
use. One quickscan thru the Quick SetUp pages and I was recording using
the small plug in stereo mic that comes with the unit. I use the small
Core Sound mics but didn't have time to dig them out.
I recorded the rehearsal. I can tell you on first listen that the
sound is at least as good as the DAT. I want to compare the plug in to
the Core Sound mics - tomorrow night. Today I took the unit to an award
meeting at which my daughter spoke. Put the M-Audio on the table and let
it run- results again excellent and easy.
