INTRODUCTION

Core Sound is very pleased to offer Edirol's new UA-5. The UA-5 has:

Two high quality microphone pre-amps with balanced (XLR) and 1/4-inch (TRS) inputs
Switchable phantom power (48 VDC)
Two Line-level analog inputs (-10 dBu) with level control
Two pairs of Line-level analog outputs (RCA and 1/4-inch)
Two A-to-D converters that operate up to 24-Bit data words and 48 KHz sampling rates (full duplex) and 96 KHz (half duplex)
S/PDIF Optical (Toslink) and Coaxial (RCA) Inputs and Outputs (selectable)
and a USB slave interface.

The UA-5 can feed PC- or Mac-compatible computers via its USB interface. (The UA-5 is not designed to be used as a stand-alone mic pre-amp/A-to-D converter; see the M-Audio Duo for that application.)

(We've tested the UA-5's S/PDIF output with the Sony TCD-D8, -D100 and PCM-M1 portable DAT recorders, using our Coax-to-7-Pin cable and it works fine!)

For USB use: plug the UA-5's USB cable into your computer, configure it via its software driver or your application's control panel, and you're ready to record. (When connected via USB, the Duo's S/PDIF output is *not* active unless your software provides an "active monitor" mode.)

Power

The UA-5 Duo is powered by a "wall wart" 9 Volt DC transformer.

Phantom Power

The UA-5 provides 48 Volt phantom power to microphones that need it; the phantom power can be switched on or off via a front panel push button when not required. (A single pushbutton controls both channels.)

Zero Latency Monitoring

The UA-5 provides zero-latency monitoring: you can monitor the recorded audio in real-time via its variable level headphone output. The 1/4" headphone jack and level control are on the front panel.

Overload Indicator

The Duo's front panel provides a single Peak LED to indicate when you're feeding either channel too hot a signal.

SCMS

When recording via its analog inputs, the UA-5 acts as a professional device and does not impose SCMS restrictions on its S/PDIF output data stream unless you specifically impose it via your host computer.

When recording via the S/PDIF digital inputs, the UA-5 passes along the SCMS state in the data stream without modification.

Note: The UA-5 is not bit-for-bit accurate in transferring digital data to the computer via its S/PDIF input.

Sample Rate Conversion

The UA-5 offers real-time sample rate conversion in hardware, the only device of its type to do so.

High Impedance Input

The second XLR input can be switched to accept a high impedance input source, like an electric guitar.

Drivers

ASIO 2.0 (WIN/MAC), MME (WIN), WDM (Win2000), Sound Manager (MAC)

Edirol regularly updates the UA-5's software drivers. They are posted to their Web site. The drivers are compatible with almost all the audio software that's out there other than programs that make an effort to restrict themselves to proprietary hardware (like ProTools).

Macintosh OS-X's driver only supports operation to 48 KHz.

PORTABLE UA-5

Core Sound is pleased to announce the portable version of the Edirol UA-5. It's a wonderful front-end for recording with laptop computers.

The Portable UA-5 is a wonderful 24-bit/96 KHz recording front-end for portable digital audio recording with your laptop computer or other digital recorders! It operates portably for at least 6 hours (or optionally eight) hours and will allow you to record with better-than-CD sound quality!

An attractive and durable foam-padded fabric carry case houses the Portable UA-5 and its battery. The portable supply uses a high-capacity, lightweight NiMH rechargeable battery pack. The Portable UA-5 comes uses the standard power supply as a battery charger that fully charges the battery pack in under five hours.

The Portable Duo weighs less than three pounds.

The case for the UA-5 is also available without the portable power supply.

Comparison of the Edirol UA-5 to the M-Audio Duo, Apogee Mini-Me and the Sound Devices USBpre 1.5

There are three reasonably priced devices that have S/PDIF and USB interfaces and that are suitable for laptop recording: the Edirol UA-5, the M-Audio Duo and the Sound Devices USBpre 1.5. There's also the more expensive Apogee Mini-Me. Click here to see a detailed comparison of the three devices.

Shipping:The UA-5, with its accessories weighs about 6 pounds. Within the continental United States, shipping and handling for the UA-5 and up to four cables via USPS Priority Mail is $16.00. Next Day Air shipping is $36, and Second Day Air is $24; please add $3 for West and South. Shipping via U.S. Postal Service to Europe, South America, Africa, Australia and Asia is $25 and $19 to Canada. Shipping via US Postal Service Express Mail to Europe, South America, Africa, Australia And Asia (typically two or three day delivery) is $39 ($52 for two). Shipping of up to four cables alone via USPS Priority Mail is $6.00. New Jersey residents must include 6% sales tax.

LIMITED WARRANTY

The Edirol UA-5 is sold with a one year limited parts and labor warranty for the original owner. If the UA-5 requires repair, contact Edirol (Telephone: 360-594-4273) with a description of the problem. We will help if you need us. No consequential damages are covered by this warranty.
