Core Sound 2Phant™ Portable Dual Phantom Power Supply

Introduction

There has never been a portable, battery-powered phantom power supply like Core Sound's 2Phant!

2Phant can provide 48 Volts of phantom power at up to ten milliAmps per channel yet operates for more than five hours on a single set of batteries. Unlike all other battery-powered, two-channel phantom power supplies that can deliver only two to four milliamps per channel, 2Phant can power every microphone on the market that specifies P48 phantom power including some of the hardest-to-power microphones from Earthworks, Schoeps, AKG, CAD Equitek, Shure KSM-series and Neumann.

2Phant is perfect for your critical 24-bit digital recordings. It is one of the quietest portable phantom power supplies available, with a noise floor of -157 dBFS (typical) and never higher than -150 dBFS.

2Phant is incredibly power efficient. It operates at full load for more than five hours on a single pair of alkaline nine-Volt "transistor radio" batteries. If you need longer continuous operating times, the batteries can be "hot-swapped" one at a time without losing power, allowing essentially unlimited continuous operation. Or you can power 2Phant with an external AC or battery supply.

No other portable phantom power supply keeps you as informed about the charge state of its batteries. 2Phant has a battery-condition LED that flashes green when supply voltage is normal, yellow when a battery is approaching minimum voltage, and red when it's time to change a battery.

2Phant is rugged and uses professional-quality parts. It has two industry-standard locking XLR-F inputs, two XLR-M outputs, and is housed in a black anodized aluminum case.

2Phant is easy to use. Power is controlled by a recessed On/Off slide switch. The batteries are very accessible and can be inserted and removed without the bother of easy-to-lose cover panels and fasteners.

Competitor Comparison

Comparison To Other Portable Phantom Power Supplies

Introduction

Most professional condensor microphones require 48 Volt phantom power. The phantom power supply must be able to provide between 44 and 52 Volts DC at currents up to 10 milliamp (mA) per microphone channel. Some professional microphones (Earthworks microphones specifically) require the full 10 mA of current; anything less will compromise their performance. Others including Schoeps, AKG Schoeps, AKG, CAD Equitek, Shure KSM-series and Neumann microphones require four or more mA.

Studio mixing boards and AC/Mains professional-quality powered phantom power supplies typically can provide the correct voltage and current. Portable battery-powered phantom power supplies are often less capable.

Summary

There are only a handful of portable phantom power supplies available today and only two could be considered professional -- Core Sound's 2Phant and Denecke's PS2. The rest either don't provide true 48 Volt phantom power, or provide it for only a very short time.

If you want a phantom power supply that can operate for more than five hours on a single pair of batteries, the you have only one choice: 2Phant.

If you want a phantom power supply that doesn't have to be turned off to change its batteries, you have only one choice: 2Phant.

If you want a phantom power supply that keeps you informed about the state of charge of its batteries, you have only one choice: 2Phant.

Operating Time: 48 Volts @ 10 mA/channel, two channels

Core Sound 2Phant’s operating time: 5 Hours/3 minutes

Denecke PS-2 operating time: 18 minutes

ART Phantom II operating time: 0 (non-compliant in voltage and load)

Rolls PB224 operating time: 0 (non-compliant with voltage)

PSC 48V PHantom operating time: 2 hours/45 minutes (one channel only)

Discussion

The Denecke PS-2's low battery LED comes on at 4 minutes.

The ART Phantom II only provides 40.6 Volts so it's not compliant with the P48 specification. It also uses 5600 Ohm resistors instead of the required 6800 Ohm resistors, so it's non-compliant in that way too.

The Rolls PB224 only provides 43.2 volts into an open circuit, so it's not compliant with the P48 specification.
